Alternative Bridalwear: 7 Things That Still Surprise Us After 13 Years

If there’s one thing we’ve learned at Quirky Weddings, it’s that there’s no such thing as being “alternative enough” to do your wedding your way. And when it comes to finding an outfit that actually feels like YOU, the incredible team at Legend Bridal know a thing or two!

For 13 years, Legend Bridal have been creating alternative wedding dresses for nearly-weds who want to ditch the rulebook, embrace their own style and wear something that makes them feel bloody amazing. From black gowns and dramatic silhouettes to completely unexpected “this is THE ONE” moments, they’ve seen the alternative bridal world change a LOT along the way.

But even after more than a decade of dressing wonderfully unconventional humans, there are still a few things that surprise them.

So, we’re handing over to Legend Bridal to share seven things they’ve learned, loved and definitely didn’t expect after 13 years in alternative bridalwear… 🖤✨

After 13 years designing and making alternative wedding dresses, you might imagine there isn’t much left to surprise us. Surely now we’ve seen every style, every colour and every reaction. The truth is, we’re still surprised almost every week and here’s our thoughts…

People travel much further than we ever imagined

Every time the studio door opens, we hear it before we see it – that excitement. The gasps, laughter, the occasional squeal. Then someone usually says, “now I understand why we’ve driven all this way!”.

We are still humbled that people regularly travel two or three hours to visit us, and we’ve welcomed couples from all over Europe and even the United States. No matter how many times it happens, we’ll never quite believe someone got on a plane to visit our little studio in Lancashire.

Families are far more open-minded that they used to be

Years ago, we often found ourselves helping people convince loved ones that black could still be bridal. That conversation hardly ever happens anymore! One of the loveliest changes we’ve witnessed is watching parents and grandparents embrace the idea that a wedding should reflect the couple, not tradition for traditions sake.

The people we’d once have expected to be the most hesitant are often the biggest champions… and we LOVE it!

People apologise for the strangest things

This one breaks our hearts a little!

People apologise for not being ‘alternative enough’! Can that even be a thing?

But people also apologise for chipped nail varnish, wearing the wrong underwear, being too short, too curvy or the wrong shape. They apologise for being too quiet or too excited. For not crying or even crying too much. They apologize for not knowing the names of fabrics or not liking the feel of lace.

We’ve learnt that almost none of the things people apologise for are things we’d even notice!

The dress isn’t always the one they expected

Some people arrive convinced they want a dramatic fitted gown and leave dreaming about 100m of tulle.

Others come determined to wear a princess dress before discovering a sleek silhouette that suddenly feels like the perfect choice.

Occasionally, everyone in the room thinks they’ve found ‘the one’… until a completely different dress quietly steals their heart.

After 13 years we still can’t always predict it and we love that!

Tiny details often become the most meaningful

Some of the smallest things we’ve ever sewn into dresses have carried the greatest meaning; a grandmother’s wedding ring, a tiny embroidered phrase, a hidden date, a loved one’s ashes kept close to the heart. Those details rarely appear in photographs, but they are part of the story.

Confidence changes everything

People often think choosing a wedding dress is about feeling beautiful. We’ve come to believe it’s about something much deeper – confidence!

There’s a moment we see in almost every appointment. Someone stands a little taller. Their eyes catch the light. They start swaying without realising it. It’s almost as though the air around them begins to glitter. That’s usually when we know they’ve stopped imagining their wedding day and started recognising themselves!

People will always surprise us

Perhaps that’s our favourite lesson of all.

No two appointments are ever the same. No two people are ever the same.

Even after 13 years, we still find ourselves learning something new. And maybe that is exactly why we still love what we do.

Because in the end, weddings aren’t really about dresses… they’re about people
